Gambling has always been a very important part of the society, even though gamblers often were marked with a pinch of negative tone in the remarks. Video poker is a game which is also simple, exciting, and has similarities with poker and slots as well. It is basically a machine game, like slots, where you insert a coin into the machine, like when playing slots and you wait while the machine deals you 5 cards, like in poker. Then you have the possibility to change the cards: you can select which cards you want to hold and which ones you want to change, and than you have another go in dealing. If you have a poker combination after the second time you have asked the machine to deal cards for you, then you will win some money. It’s easy, simple, and fun! But there are some differences too; you can’t say that it is just like poker. For example, if you have a pair, it has to be bigger or at least Jacks, otherwise you won’t win a cent. In the same time, we have to note, that while in normal poker if you play your cards well, you can win even with a pair of 2’s, or in rare cases you can bluff and win with nothing. In the case of video poker, this possibility disappears. On the screen you can read for which combination how much money will you win. Of course, the bigger the bet you place, the bigger is the winning, but also the risk of loosing money grows. Many say that this is not a good game if you want to win, because this is pure luck. But there are some strategies too, and if you stick to them, you will increase your winning and shut down you computer with a smile on your face.
It is impossible to exclude risk when it comes to gambling. No matter what you play and what you do there will always be risks. That is why it is called gambling. Video poker is only another gambling opportunity, and it is in the end every person’s right to decide whether it is good or not. Some like it and some don’t. But we must understand that everything has its ups and downs, it’s up to the player to decide which downs will he or she accepts for the ups.
Video poker doesn’t have many disadvantages. You have already met some aspects which could be considered disadvantages: the fact that you can’t bluff, and that it is imperative to have a certain combination. But let’s analyze this issue a little bit, because we can’t say that this is a certain disadvantage. For the start, we have to state, that bluffs involve risking a lot. If you are not good at it, or you have a very good ‘reader’ on the other side of the virtual table, you might loose it all. Many professional poker players exclude bluffing from their game, mainly because it is not worth the risk. In video poker, you can’t bluff even if you want to. The machine is a machine, and it will only calculate, and it won’t think at all. So, if you don’t have a winning hand, you will loose, and if you do have a winning hand, you will win. It is this easy. The other aspect is that you must have at least a pair of Jacks or better. While in normal poker variants you can win with nothing, this might seem a disadvantage. But if we look at the other side if the coin, we can state that there were lot’s of cases, when people lost a lot of money even if they had a great hand. For example, if you have three of a kind here it is absolutely sure that you will win, and you don’t have to think about the possibility that the other one might have a Royal Flush. In the same time, the machine won’t bluff either, so it’s simple mathematics, and calculations mixed with a little bit of luck. The fact that the machine won’t bluff is very important, from another point of view. We all agree that for a beginner it is very intimidating to sit down to a poker table. Also, if the poker players see any psychological weakness on the opponent player, they will use it in their advantage, without a second thought. Especially because of this many rather sit down and play video poker and not normal poker. In here, the psychology will totally disappear; the only remains of it will be in your head: you mustn’t ‘feel the card’. Many loose huge amounts of money playing video poker, because they can think that they can guess the next combination. No one can guess because the program will deal randomly the cards, you could only have blind luck. Therefore if you keep your head cool, and make rational decisions, you will be able to play a profitable game. And if you are loosing all the way, than you might consider that you have a bad day, and return some other time.
